Between 1964 and 1973 Clayton Lewis and Judy Perlman established a partnership where they produced a large collection of outstanding sculpture jewelry. While they called themselves Perlman-Lewis, they unfortunately didn’t put a logo or identification on any of their works of art. Yet their output was so unique, anyone with a trained eye can identify one of their pieces.

It’s important to note that when they met in Nevada City, California, Ms. Perlman already had an established jewelry practice and continued to design many fine pieces during their partnership. As for Mr. Lewis, his primary contribution was to design a large amount of their output, even though he also worked as a jeweler.

During their nine-year partnership, Mr. Lewis created approximately 800 pages of designs. Most of these pages are filled with dozens of unique compositions, equaling literally thousands of individual studies. After consulting with each other, they would choose which ones to produce. In doing so, they would circle the design they wanted to produce.*

After almost thirty-seven years, the Clayton Lewis Estate is working closely with Ms. Perlman to produce a series based on Clayton’s designs. In the mean time, Judy Perlman’s current work can be seen on her web site.
